Security Architect Recruiting

Designs security into systems, networks and applications before they are built, and sets the standards teams build to.

About the role

A Security Architect makes sure security is designed in rather than added later. They review new systems and changes, define reference architectures and standards, and work with engineering and IT teams so that the secure way to build something is also the easy way.

Strong architects combine broad technical knowledge across networks, cloud, identity and applications with the ability to influence teams they do not manage. We test both.

Typical responsibilities

  • Review the design of new systems, applications and infrastructure changes
  • Define security reference architectures, patterns and standards
  • Lead threat modeling for high-risk projects
  • Guide zero trust, segmentation and identity architecture decisions
  • Advise leadership on security technology strategy

What we assess in candidates

  • Breadth across network, cloud, identity, application and data security
  • Threat modeling skill and practical design trade-offs
  • Ability to influence engineering teams without direct authority
  • Clear written design documentation

How we search for a Security Architect

We review real design work with candidates, not just their resume. A structured technical conversation walks through an architecture they designed, the threats they considered and what they would change, which gives your team a clear signal before the final interview.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a security architect and a security engineer?

Architects define how systems should be designed and secured. Engineers build, deploy and run the controls. Many architects come from senior engineering roles.

Do we need a cloud-specific architect?

If most of your workloads run in AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, a cloud security architect is often the better hire. See our Cloud Security Architect page for that role.
